재키 레벤(1950-2011), 스코틀랜드와 아일랜드, 유럽에서 'Words Maker'로 불리는 인물이다. 소수이지만 충성심 강한 광팬층을 갖고 있다. 뉴웨이브 그룹 Doll by Doll로 시작했으나 포크쪽으로 돌아선 인물이다. 돌 바이 돌 이후 헤로인 중독으로 공백 기간을 거친뒤 포크 계열로 돌아섰다. 돌 바이 돌 해체기 때 헤로인 중독에 걸렸다. 헤로인 중독 극복에 침술의 도움을 많이 받았다고 한다. 이후 침술의 옹호자로 ...  레벤은 목소리 하나만으로도 주류 음반사의 주목을 받았으나 반골적 기질로 펍을 떠돌아 다니며 말년까지 곡을 쓰고 발표하고 공연을 했다. 주류에 속하지 않지만 다큐, 책, 그의 이름을 딴 위스키 상표가 있을 정도로 스코틀랜드에서는 컬트를 형성한 인물이다. 그야말로 저평가된 싱어송라이터 중 한명이다.

 

재키 레반은 유럽 곳곳 펍을 돌아다니면서 사람들의 대화를 듣고 어떤 아이디어가 떠오르면 곡을 쓰곤 했다. 그의 팬들은 재키를 밥 딜런과 비교하는 것을 반기지 않는다. 뭐 나도 밥 딜런 공식 음반, 공연은 죄다 지우고 없다. 들으면 들으수록 싫더라. 어디까지나 개인 취향이다. 레벤의 곡 가사는 딜런 곡처럼 은근한 강요가 없다. 사실 딜런의 곡 상당수는 '구원 송'이다. 레벤의 곡은 누구나 한번은 경험한 것과 관련되어 있고 어떤 결론보다는 여러 생각을 들게 해 준다. 그리고 가사 내용이 상당히 풍자적이며 삶의 아이러니를 다루고 있다. Jesus Bodybuilder Blues, Golf on the Moon Story, Kings of Infinite Space Me and Mrs Jones 등 곡 제목만 봐도 흥미롭다. 또 '깨지기 쉬운 남성성'도 그의 곡 주제 중 하나다. 1998 공연은 레벤이 포크로 넘어가는 이행기 시절 성향을 보여준다면, 2005와 2007 공연은 펍을 돌아다니던 시절의 성향을 보여준다. 2005, 2007 공연 모두 지역 펍에서 열린 공연이다. 곡 리스트는 다음 동영상 아래에서 볼 수 있다.
